  • Thank you Portland!
  • badges are great
  • having backup badges ready for those who forgot them
  • one person likes the ephemeral nature of badge
  • organic keynote introductions (organ music)
  • mapping with balloons & tilemaps! session went outside!
    • we have Wherecamp in the fall

  • morning emails - said "with love" - & weather prediction
  • nice weather!
  • we entered unconference session online -- thanks to Sumana for typing things
  • couches
  • enough seating generally
  • diversity in speakers - ethnic & gender

Dislike:

  • badges could use a harder outer shell -- had tape & paperclips, badge first aid. Slightly different stock, they fell apart more than in previous years?
    • cardboard?
  • could use more chairs that are not the wood chairs (Ikea) - more comfy seating
  • some rooms overflowed - too many people/few
    • the way to make sure that doesn't happen next year -- go in and favstar things on the schedule so we can accurately plan what goes in what room
    • make it easier to find the favstar option
    • it is the ONLY number we use for the first-run scheduling algorithm!
    • it assigns things so things with most likes won't be against each other, & to pick rooms
    • before & after the schedule is picked. Early and often!
    • fave everything you like and we will figure it out!
    • we then tweak schedule by hand. hard, will always be conflicts.
    • that's why we do video/audio
  • scheduling - content as well!
  • I work for a small tech company, was hard to find something to communicate to them (traditional company) what the value of this is, why we want to do this. ("Dilbert text")
  • need more projectors & screens
    • (did not catch answer)
  • areas of diversity to improve?
    • more people from outside US? a handful came .... help us promote.... a big barrier to that is travel. Some things we can help, some we cannot. Another reason to do one elsewhere in 2015 - may be easier for international travels
    • 2015 one would be in US. Then internationally in future.
    • how many people from outside Portland? usually about half? not as many as you think.
  • food
    • more warning about what it will be (vegetarian)
      • we say at reg
      • we ask whether people have specific dietary needs
      • we should remind people
      • more labeling of spiciness, more warning of specific menus
    • feeling of something missing
    • soup (pumpkin curry, lentils) hard to eat without bowls
    • more and more clearly marked recycling bins/compost
      • compost is hard, we'll look into it
      • add signs, get bigger bins
    • was weird to see people leaving plates under their chairs in a session, worry about knocking over cups - dishes left in inconvenient places
      • yay no dishes left on piano
      • maybe make a mention - awareness-raising. Makes work for volunteers who already have too much to do!
      • bus tray on each floor!
        • some are limitations of the venue. We have to ask them to buy more of those carts.....
          • tape a portion of the room & say "put it here!"
  • was there an attendee roster anywhere?
    • no
    • how do you get an idea of who all is here? anyone here from x company?
    • want to explore that idea while respecting privacy
  • have speaker name on roster next to talk name - on website + badge schedule
    • people make their talk titles long, so how to fit in badges!

iterating for next year

  • daily temp report in Centigrade as well? (additional idea)

improvement for volunteers/organizers

  • it's a big task to do volunteering. Some people might volunteer a little bit for individual tasks, between talks, if there was a busing bin on each floor, one person might volunteer within 1 day or throughout conf, to take it down when it is full. Not a full conference pass, just to help out a little!
